Yun Raymond Fu

Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Sciences, College of Engineering and Khoury College of Computer Sciences

Professor Fu’s lab works on the frontier of AI and machine learning with a focus on expanding machine capabilities in visual perception and recognition. Fu is the founding director of the SMILE (Synergetic Media Learning) Lab, where research is driven by the explosion of multimedia on the Internet, including personal and publicly available photos, and videos.

At SMILE, Fu and colleagues focus primarily on research with security and defense applications using computer vision, Big Data, and augmented reality to create novel algorithms for data mining and predictive modeling. One project aims to improve monitoring and security at container cargo facilities with support from Zebra Technologies Corporation, a global business solutions firm.

In 2016, Fu launched a company, Giaran, that leveraged advanced AI technology to provide an interactive virtual experience for consumers eager to try on cosmetics products and receive personalized recommendations. He sold the company and its simulation technology the next year to global cosmetics company Shiseido Americas Corporation. Fu earned his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
