Three Years of Maine Impact

Three years ago today, we announced the launch of Northeastern University’s Roux Institute during an event in Portland. A New York Times article broke the day’s news. Northeastern’s President Joseph E. Aoun and David Roux offered their compelling vision. And David shared what drove him and his wife Barbara to make their transformational investment in Maine’s future. The sense of hope and inspiration was (and still is) palpable.

Now firmly established, our impact can be felt across the state. Our inaugural class of 75 pioneering students graduated last year. A majority of them have since earned new or expanded career opportunities and 90% are building their futures here in Maine. 575 graduate students – a majority of whom are studying computer or data science – are currently enrolled. More than 150 of them will join our alumni ranks over the coming year. Maine urgently needs these talented professionals; it is an honor to support them.

We can’t reflect on our growth without recognizing the critical role our partnership with the Harold Alfond Foundation plays in our success. The institute’s Alfond Scholars Initiative provides generous need-based scholarships to all students. $18 million has been awarded since launch, with more to come. The foundation’s support also helps Maine employers experience the value of Northeastern’s signature co-op program, and enables us to recruit in-demand researchers who are driving new discoveries and innovation.

Opportunities exist beyond degree programs. Hundreds of working Mainers have experienced custom courses designed to help them meet critical business needs. 36 startups have worked in residence at the Roux, creating dozens of new Maine jobs and raising investment capital to grow these new businesses. As our impact grows, so does our team. More than 130 Mainers work at the institute.

We share and reflect on this progress today with an eye to the future – to the intertwined future of Northeastern University’s Roux Institute and the future of Maine. And we take this opportunity to recommit ourselves to working with you to build an economy that drives our vibrant and thriving state.

With gratitude,

Chris Mallett
