Brett Volmert
Part-Time Lecturer
Brett Volmert is a part-time lecturer at Northeastern University’s Roux Institute. He is also a senior scientist at IDEXX, where he studies cell biology and applies advanced cell culture techniques to answer unmet needs in veterinary medicine. Volmert has extensive experience in cell biology, cardiovascular disease, heart development, tissue engineering and genetic engineering.
During his Ph.D. at Michigan State Univeristy, Dr. Volmert explored human heart development and disease alongside stem cell and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) biology and created patterned human heart organoids for advanced modeling of human heart disease (Nature Communications, 2023). This work was patented and licensed to Stem Cell Technologies.
Volmert has received numerous awards, including the Withrow Fellowship Award, MSU Outstanding Graduate Achievement Award, and has had his research featured in the MSU Sci-Files, ACS Tissue Engineering feature, and has presented his work at an IGNITE talk.
He earned his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering (Biomaterials) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Michigan State University.
Outside of work, Volmert enjoys reading and watching science fiction and stargazing with his telescope. He is passionate about many facets of science, including cell biology, and looks forward to teaching and inspiring students in the Roux Institute’s Cell Culture course.
