The Alfond Scholars Initiative

In 2020, the Harold Alfond Foundation announced a major, multi-year grant of $100,000,000 in support of Northeastern University’s Roux Institute. The grant is targeted toward student scholarships, graduate education programming, and research capabilities for Maine residents. The grant is designed to help spur the innovation, talent development, and business growth necessary for the Maine economy.

Founded in 1950, the Harold Alfond Foundation invests in education, health care, and youth and community development causes that hold the promise of making enduring, transformative contributions to the community and state of Maine.

All Maine residents are eligible for a scholarship from the Alfond Scholars Initiative. You do not need to apply for it via this page.

Robert and Dorothy Goldberg Charitable Foundation Scholarship

Established by the Robert and Dorothy Goldberg Charitable Foundation, this scholarship can be used to fund graduate education, experiential learning, or applied research.

Based in Portland, Maine, the Robert and Dorothy Goldberg Foundation supports causes and initiatives within the local community and beyond. Through strategic grant-making and partnerships, the foundation works to make a positive impact in areas including education, healthcare, social services, and the arts, striving to improve the well-being of individuals and communities in need.

Eligibility requirements: Priority will be given to students from the White Mountains of New Hampshire and western Maine.

McGoldrick Family Graduate Promise Scholarship

Established by the McGoldrick family, this scholarship is for students with demonstrated financial need and may be used to cover a range of needs, including, but not limited to, tuition, living costs, and emergency needs.

The McGoldrick Family Scholarship was created by Carolyn and Richard McGoldrick, whose grantmaking has supported education, leadership, the environment, and racial justice. The McGoldricks are long-time Maine residents and philanthropists.

Eligibility requirements: Students must be United States citizens, University of Southern Maine Promise Scholars and/or University of Southern Maine graduates who are the first in their family to obtain a bachelor’s degree and who demonstrate financial need.

Tarr-Coyne Family Scholarship

Established by Jeff Tarr, Sr., this scholarship is for students who are actively invested in their communities and who demonstrate a desire to stay in Maine post-graduation.

With a multi-generational connection to Maine, the Tarr-Coyne family has a legacy of community investment through entrepreneurship, technological innovation, and philanthropy. The establishment of the Tarr-Coyne Family Scholarship reflects the family’s belief in the power of education to drive transformative impact.

Eligibility requirements: Students who actively invest in their communities and demonstrate a desire stay in Maine post-graduation.
