Matthew Sample

Research Scientist, AI Ethicist

Matthew Sample is an AI ethicist at the Roux Institute and the Institute for Experiential AI at Northeastern University. He combines insights from applied ethics, policy, and the social sciences to solve societal challenges associated with emerging technologies, from LLMs to organoids. As part of the Responsible AI Practice, Matthew helps industry partners to implement best practices in technology governance and responsible innovation. Matthew received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Washington in 2016 and, before joining Northeastern, has held positions at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute, the Harvard Kennedy School as a senior research fellow, and Leibniz University Hannover as professor for responsible innovation.
