2024 Summer Research Internship Opportunities

The Roux Institute at Northeastern University invites undergraduate and graduate level students in engineering, data visualization/human data interaction, life sciences and medicine, and computer science to apply for an approximate 10-week summer research experience in Portland, Maine.

The summer research internship is designed to build relationships with members of the Roux Institute community resulting in published work, new implementable technologies (e.g., prototypes, patents), and the opportunity to continue research work in the future after the internship period ends.

The program offers participants the following benefits:

  • A Paid internship of $5,000 (undergraduate students), or $7,500 (Master’s and PhD students)
  • Gain interdisciplinary research experience and receive mentorship from Roux Institute researchers
  •  Access to professional development seminars on topics including networking, communication, and entrepreneurial thinking
  • Networking opportunities with other Roux Institute researchers and partner organizations
  • A cohort of other interns, also based in coastal Portland, Maine

Enhancing Medical VR Using AR Simulations and Haptics

The Human Data Interaction Research team is seeking a research intern to contribute to our ongoing project on enhancing medical simulation through augmented reality (AR) and haptic feedback. The intern will work closely with our team to study the effectiveness of incorporating haptic feedback into an AR-based neonatal care simulation using the Hololens device.

Reverse Osmosis Test Rig Development

The Engineering Research team are seeking an undergraduate-level summer research intern who is currently majoring in mechanical, civil, or chemical engineering to join our team. In this role, you will be involved in the development of a test rig for monitoring in-situ changes in reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. This project aims to understand the life and durability of RO membranes in order to optimize the performance of desalination and wastewater treatment systems.

Predicting Disease Outcome through analyzing JC Polyomavirus DNA sequences 

The Computational Medicine Research team seeks an intern to help structure and analyze large datasets, specifically viral genomes isolated from patients, in order to determine disease outcomes. This is an interdisciplinary project, involving coding, biology, and modeling skills. The ideal candidate will have some experience in a related discipline but should also be willing and excited to learn multiple skills and novel approaches.

Building Cybersecurity Professional Pathways

The Khoury College of Computer Science seeks an intern to work closely with Dr. Scott Valcourt and other Roux Institute faculty to develop the next generation of Cybersecurity professionals. The main project will be to help deliver the NSA/NSF-funded GenCyber Camps in the Summer of 2024. Specifically, the intern will help to develop and deploy several game systems based on cybersecurity concepts and principles. Additionally, the intern will gain operational and data collection experience to help the program run smoothly and sustainably in the future.

Multiscale Model for Insulin and Glucose Homeostasis

The Computational Medicine Research team is seeking a research intern who is interested in and curious about modeling cellular biology. The ideal candidate should have good coding skills and an interest in contributing to understanding and potentially improving the treatment of prediabetes and type-2 diabetes. As a research intern, you will work closely with our team to develop and implement a multiscale model for insulin and glucose homeostasis.

Recycling of Aerospace Metals

The Engineering Research team is seeking a summer research intern to help with an experimental investigation into a novel approach to recycling of metal machine shop waste products to convert and use in metal 3D printing.  This NASA-funded project is performed in collaboration with small payload launch provider bluShift Aerospace, who will use these powders to 3D print components of their rockets.

Application of Biochar and Microbial Immobilization in Wastewater Treatment

A research group in Biotechnology seeks a summer research intern to help refine a new anaerobic digestion process for treating wastewater process for effectiveness, stability and reproducibility. Existing industrial and municipal wastewater treatment processes to treat organic and inorganic pollutants are expensive and inefficient. This new process could address the problems of current systems and help mitigate potential harm to the environment.

The Computational Medicine Research team is seeking a summer research intern to help analyze genomic, microRNA-seq, and osteoclast cell culture data to understand the mechanisms underlying of beta blocker use and impact on bone outcomes, or to contribute to a large meta-analysis across ten longitudinal studies of aging to investigate the association between bone and neurocognitive outcomes and the genetic and molecular mechanisms involved.

The Effects of Prior Experiences and Differences on Designing Sociotechnical Systems

The Human Data Interaction team at the Roux Institute is seeking a post-graduate (PhD preferred) summer research intern to expand our ongoing research on collecting and profiling users’ differences and experiences to reshape the design of human-AI collaborative systems. Studying the human-AI collaboration based on people’s differences, such as their prior technical and domain familiarity, biases, and attitudes toward AI can help system developers design interaction and intervention techniques that help mitigate or augment people’s behaviors emerging from these differences.

Algorithms to Improve Wind Turbine Engineering

The Engineering Research team seeks a graduate-level research intern to contribute to an exciting project focused on wind farm flow control and the development of nacelle transfer functions for wind turbine measurements. The project aims to use nacelle transfer functions to adjust for errors in wind speed and direction measurements taken by the sonic anemometer, which is located downstream of the rotor. The intern will be responsible for evaluating actual wind farm data and developing an algorithm that provides the nacelle transfer function.
